Canada at the 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup is Canada’s third entry into the global competition. As co-hosts we did not need to qualify so our spot was guaranteed as was our stable seeding. With the, arguably weird and outlandish, draw that took place on Friday, December 5th, 2025, we now know our group phase opponents and schedule.

“Jesse Marsch is manager of probably the best squad in their history, with Jonathan David playing for Juventus and Alphonso Davies for Bayern.”Jonathan Wilson, “World Cup draw: group-by-group analysis for the 2026 tournament” – The Guardian

While Jonathan Wilson of The Guardian misses a few key players who are playing in big European leagues, like Niko Sigur (Hajduk), Moïse Bombito (Nice), Derek Cornelius (Rangers), Stephen Eustáquio (Porto), Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi (Villareal), Promise David (Union Saint-Gilloise) and Ismaël Koné (Sassuolo), he isn’t wrong in assessing this current 2026 World Cup Men’s potential roster, as being the most talented group Canada has ever had.

Looking at the draw, despite historical biases, this is indeed a great opportunity for Canada to advance to it’s first knockout stage. Not just because the 2026 World Cup is an expanded 48 team format where even a 3rd place finish in the group stage could mean possible advancement, but also because their opposition is significantly weaker than in previous iterations of the World Cup where Canada participated. In our last foray we faced Belgium, Morocco and Croatia. The group produced 2 of the semi-finalists (Croatia and Morocco). Qatar are still, ostensibly, minnows on the international stage and while there is some rumblings of fear and apprehension, Italy haven’t yet qualified for a reason. The squad is disjointed and they’ve swapped managers multiple times since the last World Cup and Euros. Gattuso hasn’t been able to properly get a tune out of the collective to date. They do appear to be the favourites to qualify out of their playoff grouping with Northern Ireland, Wales and Bosnia & Hercegovina, but, as pointed out, they’e yet to qualify for a reason. They’re not great.

The biggest concern for Canada in the group stage is Switzerland where they’ll be hard pressed to earn a point. The matches against Qatar and whomever qualifies for the last spot are where the focus for maximizing points needs to be.

Canada’s 2026 World Cup Matches

June 12th, 2026 – Toronto: Canada vs. (Italy, Wales, Northern Ireland or Bosnia & Hercegovina)

June 18th, 2026 – Vancouver: Canada vs. Qatar

June 24th, 2026 – Vancouver: Canada vs. Switzerland

Unfortunately, for those of us in the GTA, our only guaranteed opportunity to see Canada at the 2026 World Cup will be a potential clash against Italy where there are already expectations that Canadians who are part of the Italian diaspora here will stand firm in their allegiance to the Azzurri. Add to that the fact that FIFA has embraced North American sports capitalism and has proceeded full steam towards price gouging football die-hards in Canada and the US and the GTA is, well, getting robbed of a once in a lifetime opportunity. Depressing.

The Guardian’s Eoin O’Callaghan provides an informative breakdown, even if it’s a bit dismissive, of our chances at the 2026 World Cup in his article “Canada’s World Cup draw provides plenty of possibility, but also pitfalls”.
