Free Referee Certification Course for BAS Registrants

Important Update: The BAS hosted Ontario Soccer Referee Course is now at capacity in terms of BAS covered registrations. Ontario Soccer will be opening up additional spots and will make the course available to the general public, however, all BAS covered slots have been occupied.

On April 14th, 2024 Brampton Adult Soccer will be hosting an Ontario Soccer Referee Training and Certification course and will cover the full cost of certification for any interested members of BAS.

To qualify for our Referee Certification subsidy you must have been registered to play in at least one BAS session since January 2022. The course will be filled on a “first come, first served” basis and there are a limited number of spots, so don’t hold off on getting your registration in and your refundable deposit paid.

When: April 14th, 2024 at 12:00pm (noon) to 4:00pm**

Where: Save Max Sports Centre Outdoor Field (1495 Sandalwood Pkwy E, Brampton, ON L6R 2B8)

What: Ontario Soccer Entry Level or Small Sided Match Official Course

Cost: Free ***

** Other dates for the on-field, in-person session are available if you can not attend on April 14th, but will not be hosted by BAS.
*** BAS requires a $50 deposit which will be refunded to all registrants that attend the certification course. We are collecting these deposits to ensure that those who register do attend. All those who attend will electronically receive a 100% refund of their deposit.

How do I register for the Referee Certification Course?

Before registering, please review the Clinic information at www.ontariosoccer.net/referee-clinics.

1. Send an email to our Vice-President with your full name and the email address you will be using to send your deposit.
2. We will verify that you are eligible for the course and reply to your email.
3. Send a $50 eTransfer to info[a]bramptonsoccer.com* and include your full name and “Ref Certification” in the message. BAS subsidized spots for this course are all taken, please do not eTransfer a deposit as it will be declined.
4. During the week of March 18th, you will receive an invite from Ontario Soccer to register for their Ref Centre platform. This will include instructions on completing the self-guided modules, mandatory webinar, and exam.
5. Attend mandatory online webinar session 1 week before practical session.
6. Complete online exam based on what you learned in the webinar.
7. Show up on April 14th, 2024 and undergo the training and certification session.
8. The deadline to register and submit your deposit with BAS is Friday, March 15th, 2024.

Why is BAS hosting a Referee Certification Course?

BAS has been the most successful adult soccer league for men and women in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon for over 25 years and we couldn’t have done it without referees. It is our goal to continue to grow Brampton’s soccer community and one required aspect of soccer is referees. So we have taken it upon ourselves to host a Certification course.

Is the Certification Course really free?

Yes. BAS, as an organization, thinks long term because we expect to carry on for at least another 25 years. To do this we have determined that we are going to need more referees. Soccer in Ontario, in general, is currently experiencing a shortage of referees and BAS is proactively looking to rectify that. So we are paying the full Certification Fee for any BAS member that is interested in becoming a certified match official/referee.

Why is a deposit required?

A $50 deposit must be paid to Brampton Adult Soccer via etransfer simply to ensure that those who register complete the course. Once you graduate you will receive your full $50 deposit back. The deposit is just a bit of extra motivation to make sure those that register do attend.

Why should I become a Certified Referee?

If you love soccer, and we know that the majority of people registered in BAS do, then what better way to ensure the longevity of the sport than to find rewarding ways to participate? Being a Match Official will give you an opportunity to stay active and involved in soccer as more than just a player. You can officiate in wide range of categories and programs earning a secondary income too. You can officiate youth games at grassroots levels and help a whole new generation of soccer fanatics grow into well rounded players.

If you find officiating to be really rewarding you can continue your education, continue your assessments and try to progress through officiating levels and who knows, maybe one day you’ll be in the centre circle at BMO officiating a TFC match, or at Tim Horton’s Field for a CPL game. But that’s entirely in your hands.
