Eustaquio Wins It For Canada

On June 28th, 2026, at apprixmately 4:40pm Brampton time, Stephen Eustaquio stepped into a failed clearance a the edge of South Africa’s 18 and slammed a game winning goal into the bottom corner of the net sending Canada through to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

History was made.

While the Canadian Women’s National Team have been paving the way, accruing medals and standout performances, making history and inspiring a nation for decades now, this moment, with Eustaquio netting a late winner, is a monumental step forward for Canadian soccer. This men’s team is a team of many firsts… …they scored Canada’s first men’s World Cup goal in Qatar (Davies vs. Croatia), they earned Canada’s first men’s WC point (vs. Bosnia & Hercegovina), they notched up Canada’s first men’s WC win against Qatar (6:0) as the highest single game scoring CONCACAF team in WC history, with CONCACAF’s first ever hattrick scorer with Jonathan David’s 3 goals, they’re the first Canadian team to advance to a knockout round in a men’s WC and now, now they’re the first team to win a men’s WC knockout game and become the first Canadian men’s team to reach the WC round of 16.

The stats tell an interesting story; while the possession would suggest that South Africa were in the ascendency for the majority of the match the reality is that Canada sat off and allowed the RSA defence to retain the ball, refusing to press too vociferously and allow themselves to be broken down. South Africa’s eventual 59% possession is part of the story but the really telling stats are the attempts:

South Africa: 6 Shots (1 on target)

The fact that, prior to and after Stephen Eustaquio’s goal, Maxime Crepeau was required to make a single save, is the greatest indicator of who was going to win this match if it was to end in regulation time. With Alphonso Davies introduction repeatedly drawing a double team from RSA space was opening in the midfield and when the failed clearance fell to Eustaquio he ensured that a new “Heritage Minute” segment was soon to be made.
